Inside Studio T: Skull Tree Trunk

In honor of Dia de los Muertos next week check out this awesome skull someone painted on a tree trunk. This is actually just outside of Studio T, I saw it around the corner on my way to our local art store.

Friday we share a weekly behind-the-scenes photo taken in our offices at Tea. This could be anything – great employee outfits, our sources of inspiration, shots from our parties, or photos of us hard at work. For more sneak peeks behind the scenes at Tea click here.

Fall Tea Stylista Winner!

And the winner of the Fall Tea Stylista contest is….. Tatum from Eugene, Oregon!

We were so impressed by her distinct sense of style and use of accessories to personalize all her Tea outfits! Tatum describes her style as “fun, colorful, and unique” and she absolutely loves to accessorize her looks with scarves, boots, and jewelry. Her fashion influences are her mom, friends, and occasionally someone or something on TV or in a catalog will inspire her as well.

Tatum will be coming to San Francisco in December for a tour of the Tea studio and a personal photo shoot where she can showcase all her favorite Tea outfits! We’re so excited to meet her and can’t wait to congraulate her in person!

A big thanks to everyone who entered our Fall Stylista contest, we loved seeing everyone’s photos and all their creative Tea outfits!

Behind the Design: Mas De 62 Tee

62 languages Mexico

I saw this shirt in a shop in Seattle with some friends last weekend. They were joking and asking what “62″ had to do with Mexico, not actually expecting a response.  I told them that there were more than 62 languages spoken in Mexico and they were rather impressed I had an interesting answer. They wanted to know where they could go to learn that kind of information about our designs.  I told them to stop being bad friends and read my blog posts!

People often ask me how long it takes to design a graphic. There is no straight forward answer for this.  Some graphics take days.  This one is one of those serendipitous graphics that took about 5 minutes and just worked.  Our designers happened to take a picture of hand painted house number “26″ during the Mexico inspiration trip.  We loved the numbers and the concrete created a perfect texture. All I had to do was swap the order of the numbers and done!

Announcing the Fall Stylista Finalists!

With much excitement, we’re proud to announce the finalists for the Fall 2011 Stylista competition!

We were on a search for fashion-forward 8-12 year olds to show us their unique style and we couldn’t be happier with the submissions we received! Fashionistas from all across the United States submitted their photos online or by visiting their local Tea retailer. Specifically, these stylish boys and girls created fantastic outfits that featured at least two pieces of Tea clothing.

The winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to San Francisco for a behind the scenes tour of the Tea headquarters.  Also, the winner will have her own photo shoot where she is able to show off all her fashionable outfits in front of the camera!

It was incredibly challenging to choose since we received quite a few outstanding candidates, but a small group on Tea’s Creative team evaluated all submissions based on the child’s creativity, visual flair, and how much his or her outfit embodied the Tea spirit. After much deliberation, the selection committee chose three finalists and one honorable mention:

Tatum

From Eugene, OR, 8 year old Tatum enjoys Tea because of the “fabulous colors, unique style, and the clothing is more than anything, fun to wear!”

Juliana

From Orland, CA, 10 year old Juliana provided us quite a few reasons on why she loves Tea. She told us “I love Tea because I like to draw, paint, and create sculptures and the clothes show my creative side.  I can come up with lots of different outfits with just a few dresses and shirts from Tea.”

Halle

9 year old, Halle from Reno, NV adores Tea for the “amazing styles and fabrics!”

Fiona [Honorable Mention]

Fiona, from Bozeman MT, is 10 years old and submitted such a compelling story for why she loves Tea.  She stated “. I love to wear your clothes because they express my individual style, which is countryside chic. I also love to wear your clothes because I love to travel, and your clothes remind me of our recent family trips to eastern Europe and Mexico. As well as traveling, I also enjoy drawing. Your catalogs and your clothes inspire my imagination to create beautiful clothes for the little girls in my pictures. Thank you, Tea, for designing the most wonderful clothes and outfits!”

A big thanks to everyone who participated in our Fall Stylista contest! Check back on October 28th for the announcement of the winner, which will be selected by Tea’s Co-founder Emily Meyer. Good luck to all our finalists and stay tuned for the winner!

Honor Día de los Muertos with A Fun Puzzle

Behind the Design Bonus: Día de los Muertos Downloadable Puzzle

A little while back, we wrote about how much we enjoyed our trip to Mexico City. We had a particularly fun day on a colorful boat made even more memorable by the mariachi band that played for us from their very own boat. We took that fabuloso experience and gave it a little Day of the Dead twist by turning our band into a trio of skeletons on the Mariachi en Barco Tee.

On November 2nd (not coincidentally close to Halloween), the Día de los Muertos holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico and in many Latino communities around the world (and here in San Francisco).

On the San Francisco site, I learned that “Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to our honoring our ancestors. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with their extended community, both living and departed. The celebration acknowledges that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and loved ones that have passed away.

In San Francisco, Day of the Dead has been celebrated in the Mission district since the early 70s with art, music, performances and a walking procession.”

Help your kids learn about and honor their own ancestors with this Día de los Muertos puzzle from our Modern Mexico Activity Book. Just click on the image below and print it out at your favorite size.

I’ll be thinking about my loved ones too – especially my grandmother Mabel, who passed away 2 years ago at the age of 97 in Tucson, Arizona, very close to the time of the Day of the Dead.
