DIY Advent Calendar with Petit Collage

lorena_advent_4We’ve long been fans of Petit Collage, the SF-based creators of “modern decor and playthings for homes the world over, all influenced by a mid-century aesthetic and healthy dose of playfulness”. Their products feature DIY masks, puzzles, toys, beautiful wall decor for nurseries and beyond! When we were first introduced to the founder, Lorena Siminovich, we knew immediately that she embodied the Tea spirit. This holiday season, we’re celebrating big gatherings, small moments and the traditions that connect us all. Originally from Buenos Aires, Lorena offered to share a holiday tradition she grew up with and continues with her daughter. Here, Lorena shares the story behind her holiday tradition of the DIY Advent Calendar.

The Indigenous Tribes of Bolivia

Bolivia is a country filled with deeply-rooted people from many different backgrounds and beliefs. There are over 36 different indigenous tribes that make up the population of Bolivia, indigenous meaning they are native to Bolivia, making it the highest percentage of indigenous peoples in all of South America. Most of these tribes have lived in South America for thousands of years.

What Will You Do This Year?

At Tea, we believe that every day is an adventure. We live to explore, to discover, to travel—around the globe and across the street. And we want you to go there with us! This year we will… take you on a journey to a whole new destination – Argentina & Bolivia! This year we will… ask you to share your adventures with Tea!

Ask your little citizens about their plans for this school year and use #TeaAdventurer to share your poster with us on Instagram. You’ll receive a poster in your order, but you can download our This Year I Will poster here too.  Don’t have Instagram? Not a problem! Upload your photo here.

Behind the Design: Mithila Tree

Inspiration can stem from anything; an inanimate object, a person, a taste, smell or a sound. When inspiration stems from art, it has many layers. An artist is inspired and creates a beautiful piece, which a viewer in turn can be inspired by. This was the case when our team traveled to India. Our designers saw the works of a Madhubani artist and fell in love with the technique and design. Madhubani painting is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region in Bihar, India. The painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, or matchsticks!

Our team was lucky enough to get in contact with the artist, Pradyumn Kumar. He allowed us to use his tree design on our Mithila Tree Graphic Dress and even custom designed the artwork on our Madhubani Floral Graphic Tee.

DIY Baby Blanket Embroidery Tutorial

DIY EmbroideryIn the Bengali region of India, it is a tradition for a grandmother to make each of their grandchildren a kantha quilt. The quilt is made out of three layers of fabric most commonly, strips of worn sari’s because the material is super soft against the babies’ skin and perfect for nap time or cuddling. The tradition of the kantha quilt is a way of connecting with family, even after the grandparents are gone. It is such an important tradition that the grandmother’s will make extra kantha quilts so that if she passes away before all of her grandchildren are born, they will still have a quilt.
