ABOUT THE PHOTO:
Founded in 1996, Deporte y Vida serves more than 1,600 children living in the slum of Villa El Salvador, outside Lima. The group uses sports to involve young people in education and to help them develop life skills. In 2002, with The Global Fund for Children's support, Deporte y Vida created the Jardines de Pachamac Community School, which teaches standard academic subjects as well as culture, values, and other aptitudes and attitudes for life. It was among the 24 groups selected to participate in the first World Cup of Street Soccer, held in Germany as part of the 2006 World Cup celebration.
